If you were to watch one film this year, I would say it should be the Oscar Award Nominee for Best Picture Hacksaw Ridge. I cannot recommend this enough, as the incredibly inspiring tale of Desmond Doss, a Protestant Christian (Seventh Day Adventist) who enlists in the army during World War II refusing to don a weapon even in the thick of battle and facing death is sure to amaze and embolden us to adhere to the morals and ethics about the value of all human life.
Andrew Garfield plays Desmond Doss, a US Army medic awarded Medal of Honor by the President Harry S. Truman for saving lives during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II.
Doss’s love for his country could not allow himself to sit back while everyone around him were putting their lives on the line to protect the country and way of life. This example shows that being a pacifist does not mean one should sit back on the sidelines while injustices are happening, on the contrary we are called to “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” James 1:22 ESV
Doss is allowed to serve, despite the disdain and protest of his superiors and peers. His approval by military officials did not come easily however, with threats of being court martialled and dishonorable discharge among other punishments. He is sent to the Pacific arena, armed with the Holy Bible, medic equipment and the breastplate of righteousness (Ephesians 6:11) It may sound like fanaticism but I believe this is what true faith looks like in action. Being unarmed did not prove to be a weakness however, as he saves dozens of lives during the Battle of Okinawa.
After Desmond’s desire to serve as an unarmed medic is approved by military officials, he is sent to the Pacific arena, where many American soldiers gave up their lives. Doss however being incredibly bold and faithful to the promises of his faith -he then saves dozens of lives during the Battle of Okinawa.
Being different may make other people treat you differently and even belittle you, but being true to yourself and adhering to a standard higher than the world’s current mood or morals will undoubtedly reward you in righteousness. Desmond Doss trusted in his faith to protect him, and in doing so saved so many others who may have had different beliefs but the outcome remained the same. Don’t be afraid to stand up for what you think is right, even if it isn’t the popular opinion. The mood of the times change, right and wrong does not. I hope by watching this, it emboldens us to question our morals and principles. Do the ends truly justify the means? Doss showed that one does not have to give up their convictions to stand up for what they believe in, and that anything can be achieved if we have Christ who strengthens us. (Philippians 4:13)
