being a fan myself of artists and bands, i really appreciate fan made videos. i feel they give justice to the songs and artists, just like how dutch photog, music and film director anton corbijn feels the need to work with artists and bands he himself personally is a fan of, there’s a more intimate and cohesive aesthetic that helps him relate the visual identity of songs, artists, or even characters (see the Joy Division movie, Control)
fan directed videos can be just as good or even better depending on your taste as michel gondry’s, spike jonze’s, or even andrew morahan (more famous to me for doing the heart-wrenching november rain video of guns n’ roses) not to mention a couple of notches more personal, unrestricted by censorship, and more conducive for creativity since I’m assuming there are fewer deadlines to be met)
so if you’re into music videos, get out there and try making one for an artist that you love. i promise it’ll be really self-fulfilling.

Dark Was the Night is the twentieth compilation release benefiting the Red Hot Organization, an international charity dedicated to raising funds and awareness for HIV and AIDS. Featuring exclusive recordings by a number of independent artists and production by Aaron and Bryce Dessner of The National, the compilation was released on 16 February 2009 (UK) and 17 February (US) as a double CD, three vinyl LPs, or as a digital download. John Carlin, the founder of the Red Hot Organization, was the executive producer for the album. The title is derived from the Blind Willie Johnson song “Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground”, which is covered on this collection by the Kronos Quartet.
To date, Dark Was the Night has raised over $1.2 million, a sum that represents all the profits from worldwide sales. John Carlin was quoted as saying “Dark Was the Night encapsulated the spirit and creativity of a new generation of musicians whose work struck a chord and got people to actually purchase the album and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight AIDS.”
